New modular secure building for Brisbane Youth Detention Centre – a first for Queensland
QUEENSLAND’S first modular secure detention centre building has opened at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre.
Working closely with the Department of Communities, Ausco Modular has constructed a new 16 bed accommodation unit.
Ausco was able to meet the specific security requirements of the department by constructing the building off-site, reducing the disruption and risk of a building site within the centre.
Factory built under strict quality control, the new unit uses the latest construction and engineering technologies to deliver a secure environment complete with CCTV, stainless steel furniture, and specialised intercom systems.
Ausco Modular chief executive officer Paul Bailey said factory construction helped to deliver the highest levels of security, both for the facility’s construction and operation.
“Because the buildings were built in a factory then craned onto site, the disruption to secure areas within the centre was minimised,” Mr Bailey said.
The buildings were constructed in Ausco Modular’s Wacol factory and fitted out according to the requirements of the Department of Communities. Features include anti-tamper fittings, electronic doors and smoke exhaust ventilation systems.
“Ausco worked very closely with the Department of Communities to design a building that would deliver all the security, durability, robustness, and functionality required of a detention centre.
“No other modular building company has been able to deliver such a unique combination so effectively. Ausco is proud to have delivered – literally – the state’s only modular detention building,” he said.
Earlier this year, Ausco provided a new library building for the centre, which meets the same design and construction requirements..
Mr Bailey said off-site construction offered governments and private organisations a fast and flexible alternative to traditional construction.
“Buildings constructed off site are increasingly being used for a range of new and innovative purposes. These include multi-level office blocks, hospital and medical buildings, high-technology teaching classrooms and laboratories, and secure buildings.”
