Building MMC Housing - Ausco's Talented Team

There’s more to building modular homes than just materials, construction plans and a factory. Behind each module that makes up each home is a dedicated team of tradespeople, consisting of both experienced workers and fresh-faced apprentices, working together and sharing knowledge to bring this project to life.

It’s not just houses being built in our factory, we’re also developing careers and skills, and in addition to our experienced workforce, we are proud to be employing 44 apprentices around the state who are developing skills in a variety of different trades and gaining valuable, on the spot experience in modular construction. Our team’s combined efforts so far have added up to over 15,000 work hours across various project phases, and they’re still going!

With a strong focus on training and development, this MMC project has created an incredible opportunity for our apprentices to gain valuable hands-on experience in the modular construction space. Many of the apprentices in our factory west of Brisbane are either Ipswich locals or come from further west, and in a new record for Ausco, 15 of our awesome apprentices are women and 7 are from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. By participating in such a large scale construction project, they are not only learning quickly on the job but also directly contributing to creating meaningful, safe and modern homes for Queenslanders in need.

One of the biggest benefits to factory based modular construction is the ability to quickly and efficiently build high quality structures and repeat that as many times as necessary. Having a centralised, local workforce and carefully planned build process allows work to continue even in bad weather, and the end result is a very quick turn around once construction is underway.

  • Our MMC houses are able to be built in a short timeframe, as our factory has all the required materials, equipment and tradespeople in one location ready to go.

  • They’re completed in two stages, the first stage consists of structure building (floor, walls, roof, windows and doors) to make the modules secure and weatherproof.

  • The second stage allows for the interior to be finished, including the installation of the kitchen, showers, cabinetry, power and water along with external cladding and painting, getting the modules to a stage where they’re ready to hit the road.

  • Once they arrive at their destination, the modules are joined together and final exterior works are completed... and then the houses are ready to become a home!

Building modular housing in a factory environment provides two clear benefits. Our team are rapidly delivering high quality, durable and sustainable homes for Queenslanders to ease local housing supply shortages. At the same time, our factory staff are training the next generation of diverse, skilled tradespeople, giving them on the job experience that will set them up for a bright future in modular construction.

We’re incredibly proud of our entire team who have been working together to build and deliver meaningful solutions to Queensland’s housing crisis.
