Crossing the ditch
When Jasmine Chan graduated with her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Auckland in 2015, she had no idea her career would propel her into the world of construction and modular buildings.
“I essentially tripped and fell into the construction industry,” she laughed when asked about her career progression to-date.
In 2021 Jasmine joined the Interlink Modular team in Auckland, a division of Portacom New Zealand and sister company to Ausco Modular. In her role as Project Coordinator, she worked alongside the Project Managers on the ground to deliver modular infrastructure to schools throughout New Zealand for the Ministry of Education.
When her family decided to cross the ditch to live in Melbourne, Jasmine was prepared to leave her Interlink family, yet a conversation with management in Brisbane opened another new opportunity for her at Ausco’s Dandenong branch.
“Everyone was great to work with. I cried a bit; I was sad to leave my Interlink family. There was only six of us in the Auckland office, but everyone was so wholesome and positive and proactively helped each other even when you didn’t specifically ask for it.”

Jasmine recently joined Ausco Modular as a Construction Supervisor.
“The stars aligned but I’m also proactive and want to keep learning things,” she added.
When asked about her experience as a female in a traditionally male dominated industry, Jasmine said she finds it encouraging to see more women in management roles.
“It’s helpful to have that balance. We’re here to get things done, I like that mentality. If you enjoy it, you’ll find that this industry is good to work in. You have to find your beat in what you want to do. I prefer learning things on site. You have to not mind getting your hands dirty every now and then.”
Jasmine also credits her skillset for coding and writing applications as a positive for any role she undertakes.
“I just want to make things easier for myself!”
As for her transition to living in Australia... don’t mention the size of the spiders.
“I dislike the amount I’ve seen in Australia. Everything else has been great so far.”
